Written in Green

There are places that announce themselves in bold strokes, and there are those that reveal their meaning more quietly, written not in stone or story, but in the land itself. The Bukidnon Communal Ranch belongs to the latter. Its hills stretch outward in an unbroken sweep of green, shaped less by design than by use, where cattle roam and the wind moves freely across open ground. Nothing there asks for attention, and yet everything holds it. It is the kind of place that unravels itself on its own before a beholder’s sight.

It was our third day in Northern Mindanao when we had the chance to see for ourselves the scenic ranch that photos and videos from social media have been popularly talking about. That day would likewise be the one that Ran and I would be reunited with our organizers-turned-friends from Aura Adventures, Corina and Raphael. Together with Clark and Guada and other trip joiners, we embarked on a group journey in Northern Mindanao, starting with Bukidnon where the four of us likewise started our quad trip the day prior.

The Bukidnon Communal Ranch is the only government-owned ranch in the Philippines. While it is now one of the most visited sites in the province, it was established as part of the local government’s efforts to support cattle raising and rural livelihood in Impasugong, likely in the decades following the town’s formal creation in 1950. More than a tourist site, it remains a working landscape, shaped by both agricultural necessity and the long-standing communal traditions of the highlands.

The rays of the sun were alternating behind the clouds, offering both clear blue sky backdrops for the hills at one side and a cloudy grayish one at the other. The same provided seemingly varying hues of green that made each spot in the ranch unique in its own way that as if one was not standing on the same tract of land. We walked our way through the picturesque sceneries in the ranch, stopping each time the background will be such a pity to miss for a photo opportunity.

When we were done with the photo ops along the stunning mountain ranges of Impasugong, we went to see the wranglers in the ranch. A ranch visit would not be complete without horseback riding, would it? We hence rode on the horses and experienced the highlands from a rancher’s perspective.

After we have dismounted from the horses, we went to another feature of the ranch that we had yet to see, its man-made pond. Despite being added artificially, the pond blends seamlessly with the surroundings that as is it is natural. Its addition accentuates the vast track of land with a body of water, giving visitors another angle by which to view the ranch and the mountains that overlook it.

We spent more than an hour in the ranch but we really cannot say that it was enough. It was an experience like no other, not only for the sightseeing but most especially for the story that the land tells. The ranch is not just a tourist destination. It is a place where the land found its purpose, where the trade of man and the pristineness of nature meet together, coexisting in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Places like the Bukidnon Communal Ranch do not leave you with a single memory, but with a quiet impression that lingers—the openness, the stillness, the sense that the land is simply allowed to be. And perhaps that is what stays the longest: not the view itself, but the understanding that some places are not meant to be taken in all at once, only returned to, again and again, until what is written upon them begins, in some small way, to be read.
